When You Get Bogged Down

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

There was an old lady name Lollie

Who liked to write by golly

One day she got stuck

In a writer's rut

Her writing was no more than folly.

I know, I know...stuck and rut don't rhyme but that's the best I could come up with. I never claimed to be a poet.

When it comes to writing, do you ever get bogged down? The harder you to try to write, the deeper you sink into the mire of blank pages..

First, don't be like Lollie. She wrote until she found herself stuck in a writer's rut and then quickly gave up the craft. Remember, this too shall pass. It really will.

If you do find yourself spinning your wheels in that dreaded rut called "writer's block," go easy on yourself. Give yourself permission to walk away for a short amount of time. Read a good book. Reconcile the checkbook. Take a nap. Play with the kids. Take the dog for a walk. Go shopping (but leave the credit card at home). Instead of giving yourself a writer's deadline (I will write 3,000 words today), give yourself a break deadline (I will not write one word for the next thirty-six hours).

Rested and refreshed, you will return to your story ready to grind out your 3,000 words.
